Student drop-out rate in UP, Bihar alarming: NUEPA

New Delhi: The claims by Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand governments of providing quality education to children find no solid footing. A report by the National University of Educational Planning and Administration (NUEPA) highlighted the wide gap in the government's education structure between Northern and Southern states. The published report presented a shocking figure of the student drop-out ratio between the northern and southern states.

In its latest report, the NUEPA detailed that the student drop-out ratio in Bihar primary schools is 12 percent, 12.7 percent in Uttar Pradesh and 15.1 percent in Jharkhand respectively while the national average of such students is only 8.02 percent.

“These bigger states are unable to provide basic education and fundamental facilities to those who are studying in schools thus leading to initial drop-outs,” the report claimed.

On the other hand the drop-out ratio in Karnataka is only 4.5 percent, 2.7 percent in Gujarat and 2 percent in Tamil Nadu and Himachal Pradesh.

According to the report, at least 15.55 percent students, after getting admitted at the primary level leave school by Class 5 while 10.47 percent of them leave school in Class 1 itself.

“The average of the students leaving school between Class 2 and 3 is around 5 percent,” the report stated adding that the condition is gruesome in bigger states in comparison to smaller ones. Therefore, states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar must follow a strategic model to systematize the education pattern in their respective states.
